Ribbon Blender Mixing Particle Size
Particle size is also an important consideration in mixing solid. Attempting to mix large solids with finely divided solids can lead to segregation once the mixing action is ceased. Fines can work their way through the larger particles and settle out. The settling will also be affected by ratio of the fines to the larger particles.
Consider a mixture of perfect spheres which would have a free void space of about 26%. If the fines volume is 24%, they will fill the void spaces and have no place to migrate or settle. If on the other hand there were only 5% fines, there would be ample void space for the solids to move and settle out. Particle shape and density will also affect the settling. One simple way to avoid segregation is have the various components be of similar size and avoid the creation of free spaces.
For special mixing applications such as powdered metals or friable materials, consider our Rota-Cone® Blenders or CrossMix® Fluidizing Mixers.
